The Bicolor Blenny (Ecsenius bicolor) is a colorful and entertaining marine fish known for its two-tone appearance, curious personality and habit of perching among rockwork.
Its dark blue-brown front transitions into a bright orange or yellow-orange rear. Bicolor Blennies are often seen peeking from caves, hopping between rocks and grazing on algae throughout the aquarium.
Generally hardy and easy to care for, this species is a great choice for newer saltwater aquarists with an established aquarium.
Introducing New Livestock
Aquarists may choose to follow their own quarantine protocol before introducing new livestock into an established display aquarium.
Care Requirements
Scientific Name: Ecsenius bicolor
Common Name: Bicolor Blenny / Two-Colored Blenny
Care Level: Easy
Temperament: Generally Peaceful
Diet: Primarily Herbivorous
Minimum Aquarium Size: 30 Gallons
Reef Compatibility: Reef Safe With Caution
Aquarium Type: Marine / Reef
Recommended Quantity: One per Aquarium
Aquarium Setup
Provide an established saltwater aquarium with plenty of live rock, caves and crevices. Rockwork provides hiding places, perching spots and natural grazing surfaces.
Bicolor Blennies are generally peaceful but may become territorial toward other blennies and similarly shaped fish. Keeping more than one is not recommended for most home aquariums.
Reef Compatibility
Bicolor Blennies are commonly kept in reef aquariums and usually graze on rockwork without disturbing corals.
However, individual behavior varies. Underfed fish may nip at clam mantles or fleshy LPS corals. Proper nutrition and adequate grazing opportunities can help reduce this behavior.
Feeding
Offer foods containing marine algae and spirulina along with appropriately sized marine pellets, flakes and other prepared foods.
Natural algae should supplement the diet but should not be relied upon as the fish’s only food source.
Personality
Bicolor Blennies have plenty of personality. They often choose a favorite cave and spend their time darting between hiding places, perching on rocks and watching activity around the aquarium.
Live-Animal Shipping
Weather or unsafe carrier conditions may delay shipment to protect the livestock.
Partner Live-Arrival Terms
